I just completed my search for a new position (which I started last week, on 27 April). I was lucky: my skills are in high demand, I found some good recruiters to work with, and I have quite a bit of experience interviewing (both as a candidate and as a hiring manager).
Unlike previous job searches, this time every step of my process was done remotely. I didn’t visit any employers’ work places. I didn’t meet anyone face to face. In fact, everything happened while I was at home (aside from a few calls with recruiters that I took while I was out walking).
Similarly, my onboarding into my new job was nearly 100% remote. On Day 1, I went to our office near London Bridge station. I met with our HR Director and collected my new laptop. I had a few short meetings (and lunch at a nearby restaurant, outdoors and safe!), before heading home to finish my first workday.
Did you do this too? If so, I want to hear from you!
I realize that many people have gone through a similar process. I’m planning to post my thoughts and observations, but would love to share some experiences from my colleagues and contacts.
So, if you’ve gone through this process over the past year, please send me your thoughts and observations.
- What did you do differently? (Beyond the most obvious difference I described above – all (or nearly all) meetings by phone or video-conference)
- What didn’t change at all?
- What did you learn?
Please send me your thoughts at darylorts@gmail.com (or leave them in comments here, if you’d prefer). I’ll collect them, blend them with my own experience and add a post or two here soon.
