About a year ago, I started a new job. I joined OpenMarket in March 2018 and was hired to look after the Engineering team in London. A few months later, my boss left the company and I was promoted to VP of Engineering, leading a global engineering team with three main locations: London, Seattle, and Guadalajara.
Since then, OpenMarket has gone through some significant changes. Our CEO left in January and two of our other senior leadership team VPs have also left. We’ve also seen some turnover at the next level of leadership.
Through these past six months of change, I’ve recognized the importance of open, honest and consistent communication to the rest of the team. In times of uncertainty, everyone wants reassurance and everyone looks for opportunities to have their questions answered (and to hear the answers to questions raised by their colleagues).
Our strength at OpenMarket, like many places I’ve worked, lies in the talent and commitment of our team members. The main job for us, as leaders, is to help sustain, nurture, and develop that talent. That’s the part of my job that I love most.
